How to remove an image background for free, in your browser

How automatic background removal works

Modern background removal uses a machine-learning model trained on millions of images to recognize the difference between a subject and its background. It looks at the whole picture, decides which pixels belong to the main object, and makes everything else transparent. Because the model has "seen" so many people, products and animals, it can usually trace an outline far faster and more accurately than doing it by hand.

How to get clean edges

The model does most of the work, but the photo you feed it makes a big difference:

• Good contrast helps — a subject that clearly stands out from its background is easier to separate than one that blends in.
• Use a reasonably sharp, well-lit photo. Blurry or very dark images give the model less to work with.
• Higher resolution means cleaner edges, especially around fine detail.
• Simple, uncluttered backgrounds produce the most reliable cutouts.

Where it struggles
